Caring for the Feet

Why is footcare important for diabetics?

The feet of a person with diabetes are prone to poor circulation of the blood because of narrowed blood vessels as well as nerve damage preventing you from noticing injury early. As a result, infection is more likely in diabetics and delayed treatment can result in serious damage to your feet including gangrene and amputation.

This can be avoided with a program of daily foot care.

Daily Foot Care

  • Carefully check both feet for blisters, cuts, bruises and areas of redness. Look between each toe and use a mirror if necessary to inspect the soles of your feet.

  • Wash feet with mild soap and warm water every day. If your feet are insensitive to temperature, check the water temperature with your hand, elbow or a thermometer. Dry feet thoroughly especially between the toes.

  • Apply a little moisturiser to your feet after drying - especially on cracked heels.

  • Wear clean, well-fitting cotton socks or stockings each day.

  • Look and feel inside your shoes each day for unnoticed stones, nails or torn linings which may rub feet.

Toe Nail Care

  • Cut your nails straight across.

  • Never round or angle the corners.

  • The nail length should be filed evenly with the end of the toe.

Tips for Improving Circulation

  • Do not smoke, as smoking contributes to poor circulation.

  • Exercise daily. (unless a serious foot problem has already developed. Consult your doctor)

  • Avoid wearing garters or socks with a tight elastic band.

  • New shoes should be gradually broken in, and worn with cotton socks on.

To Avoid Injury

  • Always wear shoes to protect your feet - never go barefoot.

  • Wear well fitting leather shoes.

  • Use socks at night to keep your feet warm rather than hot water bottles which may burn your feet.

  • If you have corns or calluses, see a podiatrist (foot care specialist). Never cut, tear off or use chemicals to remove corns or calluses.

If you have any foot injuries or trouble looking after your feet or nails, consult your podiatrist or doctor early.
